Indonesia in June: what to expect

June sits in the middle of Indonesia's dry season for Bali, Java, Lombok and Nusa Tenggara. Expect warm days, lower humidity than the wet months and long sunny stretches, with the odd short afternoon shower rather than the all-day rain of December to March. Sea conditions to the Gilis and Komodo are usually calm enough for fast boats and dive trips.

The highlands and volcanoes are the exception. Bromo and Ijen sit above 2,000 m and nights drop to around 5 °C, so a sunrise trip needs a jacket, hat and gloves. Ubud and the Bali interior are cooler and greener than the coast. Sumatra's north is at its driest in June to August, while Sulawesi and Maluku have mixed patterns and Raja Ampat is in its wetter half of the year.

This is a seasonal pattern, not a forecast. Check the Indonesian meteorological agency (BMKG) and your marine operator before booking crossings.

June is high season. Australian school holidays start late June and run into July, which is when Bali, the Gili islands and Labuan Bajo fill up. Hotel rates on Bali climb towards July levels, fast boats and Komodo trips sell out days ahead, and popular sunrise viewpoints such as Mount Batur get busy before dawn.

Java is less affected: Yogyakarta, Borobudur and Bromo stay manageable outside weekends and Indonesian holidays. If you want the dry-season weather without peak prices, aim for the first half of June or wait until September.

Book the fixed pieces — Bali or Gili accommodation, Komodo and liveaboard trips, Bromo sunrise tours — before you fly. Domestic flights between Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Labuan Bajo also tighten in the last week of the month.

Galungan and Kuningan, Bali's biggest temple festival cycle, falls every 210 days on the Balinese Pawukon calendar, so it lands in June in some years and December in others — check the exact 2026 dates before you plan around it. When it does fall in June, roads fill with penjor bamboo poles, temples hold ceremonies and some businesses close for the day.

Waisak, the Buddhist celebration at Borobudur, and Idul Adha, the Islamic festival of sacrifice, can also fall in late May or June depending on the year — both dates move, so check. Idul Adha brings a short domestic travel peak and busier trains and flights.

June has no fixed national holiday, which is one reason it is popular: the calendar is clear and the weather is reliable.

Bali is at its best: dry, sunny and set up for beach days, Ubud rice terraces and temple trips. Expect company. Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan day trips run reliably, and the Gili islands are reachable on calm seas.

Java works well for a volcano-and-temples route: Yogyakarta for Borobudur and Prambanan, then Bromo and Ijen for cold, clear sunrise views. Sumatra's north — Lake Toba, Bukit Lawang — is in its driest window, though haze from land-clearing fires can appear later in the dry season (check).

Skip Raja Ampat and much of Maluku if diving is the goal: their dry season runs roughly October to April. Sulawesi is mixed, so check conditions island by island.

Pack for a warm, mostly dry trip with one cold exception. Light cotton and quick-dry clothes, a rain shell for short showers, sandals plus closed shoes for volcano hikes, and a sarong or scarf for temple visits. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent and a refillable water bottle.

For Bromo or Ijen add a warm jacket, hat, gloves and a buff for dust and sulphur smoke; a mask or respirator is worth having for Ijen. Cash in rupiah helps in small warungs and at entrance gates, and a power bank covers long travel days.

May is slightly quieter and still dry, with shoulder prices. July and August are peak: the driest, clearest and most expensive months, with Independence Day on 17 August. September keeps the dry weather with fewer crowds and is often the best-value window of the year.
