Indonesia in April: what to expect

April is the handover month. The northwest monsoon that soaked Bali, Java and Nusa Tenggara from November to March is fading, but it has not stopped: expect humid days, warm nights and short heavy afternoon showers rather than all-day rain. The landscape is at its greenest, and waterfalls and rice terraces look their best before the dry season browns them out.

Lowland temperatures sit in the high twenties to low thirties Celsius, with coastal Bali and Jakarta feeling hotter because of humidity. Upland spots are cooler: Bromo and Ijen nights drop near 5 °C, so a jacket matters if you are doing a sunrise volcano trip. In Sumatra the picture is different — April is one of the wetter months around Medan and Lake Toba. Raja Ampat and parts of Maluku are at the end of their dry window, with seas still workable early in the month.

April sits in the shoulder: busier than February, quieter than June. Bali's south (Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu) and Ubud stay busy year-round, but hotel rates and villa prices are typically below the July–August peak, and you can still find good rooms a few weeks out rather than months. Java's big sights — Borobudur, Prambanan, Bromo — see steady domestic traffic, especially at weekends.

The one thing that can flip April from quiet to chaotic is Idul Fitri. The holiday moves about eleven days earlier each year, so it sometimes falls in April. When it does, tens of millions of Indonesians travel home for mudik: trains, flights, buses and toll roads fill for roughly two weeks, and Jakarta empties. Check the 2026 date before you lock in domestic transport.

April's calendar is thin on fixed national events, which is part of its appeal. The main variable is the Islamic calendar: Ramadan and Idul Fitri drift earlier each year, and either can land in April. If Ramadan runs into April, expect shorter business hours and discreet daytime eating outside Bali, plus lively evening food markets. If Idul Fitri falls in April, expect the mudik travel surge and closures around the holiday itself.

On Bali, temple ceremonies follow the Balinese calendar rather than the Gregorian one, so a ceremony or odalan can fall in any month — ask locally. Kartini Day on 21 April honours the Indonesian women's rights figure Raden Adjeng Kartini; schools mark it with events, but it is not a big travel disruption. Confirm exact 2026 dates with an official source before planning around them.

Bali is the easy first choice: base in Ubud for rice terraces and temples, add a beach base in Sanur, Seminyak or Canggu, and use the month's green landscape for walks and waterfalls. Java rewards the same window — Yogyakarta for Borobudur and Prambanan, then east to Bromo and Ijen for volcano sunrises. Nusa Tenggara, including Labuan Bajo and Komodo, is opening up as seas calm.

If you want the opposite season, Raja Ampat and parts of Maluku are still in their dry window early in April, though conditions taper late in the month. Sumatra is the weakest pick this month — save Lake Toba and Bukit Lawang for June to August. Wherever you go, build in a wet-weather backup: a museum, a cooking class or a spa afternoon.

Pack for humid heat with a rain layer. A light rain shell or compact umbrella earns its place; so do quick-dry fabrics, sandals that survive wet pavement, and a dry bag for boat trips and scooter rides. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent for dusk, and a refillable bottle — refill stations are common in Bali and Java cafés.

If you are doing Bromo or Ijen, add a warm mid-layer, a hat and gloves for the pre-dawn cold, plus a buff or mask for volcanic dust. Modest clothing helps at temples and in conservative areas outside Bali: shoulders and knees covered, and a sarong for Balinese temple visits.

March is still wet and carries Nyepi, when Bali shuts for 24 hours, plus the Idul Fitri travel peak in some years. May is the start of the reliable dry season and a strong month for Komodo, Bromo and Bali. June brings dry, clear weather but also the first wave of Australian school-holiday crowds and higher prices.

If your dates are flexible, May and September are the sweet spots; April is the value pick just before the crowds arrive. Compare the full year before you commit.
