Where to stay in India: best areas and types of hotel

Match the area to the trip you are actually taking, then set the price band. Rates below are 2026 estimates for a double room and move sharply with season and city.

Then pick the area inside the city. In Delhi, stay near a metro line rather than deep in a suburb; in Agra, Taj Ganj is a five-minute walk from the east gate but noisy, while Fatehabad Road is quieter and needs a rickshaw; in Jaipur, the walled city puts you among the bazaars and Hawa Mahal, while Civil Lines is calmer and greener. In Mumbai, Colaba and Fort put the colonial core and the sea front on foot; Bandra and the airport belt suit short stays and business. In Kochi, the Fort Kochi and Mattancherry area is the walkable one. In Varanasi, a guesthouse near the ghats beats a hotel across town, but check the access — some lanes are too narrow for a car.

Then choose the class. Below roughly ₹2,500 you are buying location and character, not comfort: expect a fan or a weak air conditioner, occasional hot water and street noise. From ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 you get reliable air conditioning, a lift, a 24-hour desk, airport pickup and breakfast. Above ₹10,000 you are paying for service, a pool and heritage architecture — worth it in Udaipur or a Rajasthan palace hotel, rarely worth it in a city where you will be out all day.

Then check the practical filters before you pay: is the property licensed to accept foreign guests, is GST included in the quote, is there a lift if you cannot manage stairs, is the water hot in the morning, and how far is the nearest metro or railway station. Confirm the last one on a map rather than on the hotel's own description.

Finally, book in the right order. Reserve the first two nights before you fly so you have somewhere to land, then book the rest as you go — 2–4 weeks ahead in peak season, and 2–3 months ahead for Christmas and New Year in Goa or Rajasthan. Peak season is Oct–Mar across most of the country, Nov–Feb in the south, and Jun–Sep in Ladakh and the high Himalaya. Rates in Goa and Rajasthan can double or triple between 20 December and 5 January. Monsoon (roughly Jun–Sep) is the cheap window in most of India, with real rain and humidity.

Heat and smog are the two things that most often ruin a stay. In April to June, air conditioning is not optional in the plains. In Delhi in winter, smog can be heavy; a room with sealed windows and a purifier helps. Check the current situation before you commit to a long stay.
