India in July: what to expect

July is the core of the south-west monsoon. The rain reaches Kerala first in June and covers most of India by July, so the northern plains, Rajasthan, the Konkan coast, Goa and the south-west run wet and humid. Delhi and Agra see heavy showers with hot, sticky days between them. Mumbai is at its wettest, with the city's monsoon total running past 2 m.

The exceptions are the high deserts. Ladakh and Spiti sit in the rain shadow of the Himalaya and stay largely dry, with mild days and cold nights. The Himalayan hill stations — Shimla, Darjeeling, Sikkim, Dharamsala — are green and cool but exposed to landslides and road closures. Tamil Nadu and the east coast are comparatively dry in July because their wet season comes later, in October–December.

Outside Ladakh this is one of the quietest and cheapest months of the year. Hotels, homestays and tour operators discount heavily, trains are easier to book at short notice, and the big monuments — the Taj Mahal, Amber Fort, Hampi — are far less crowded than in the October–March window. The trade-off is that some beach shacks in Goa and the Konkan stay shut until November, and a few hill guesthouses close for the rains.

Ladakh runs on the opposite logic. July is peak season there because the passes are open and the weather is at its best, so Leh flights, hotels and permits are the one thing worth booking well ahead. Everything else in the country can be booked a few days out.

July is a thin month for large festivals, but the religious calendar keeps moving. Hindu festivals follow the lunar calendar, so dates shift each year — check locally before you plan around one.

The monsoon itself is the event: Kerala's tourist season markets the rains, and the Western Ghats turn green. In Ladakh, the short summer brings local monastery festivals (check dates with the local tourism office). Independence Day falls on 15 August, not July, but preparations and closures start late in the month.

Ladakh is the clear first choice. Leh, Nubra, Pangong and the Spiti valley are dry, the high passes are open roughly June–October, and July is the best month for the region. Book flights and permits early and allow two days in Leh to acclimatise to the altitude.

The Himalayan hills — Shimla, Darjeeling, Sikkim, Dharamsala, Kodaikanal, Munnar — are cool and green, but check road conditions daily: landslides close hill roads in July and August. Keep a buffer day before any onward flight.

For cities, Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai and Kochi still work if you accept heat, humidity and short, heavy downpours. Museums, forts and indoor sights are the sensible plan, with early mornings for anything outdoors. Tamil Nadu and the east coast — Chennai, Madurai, Mamallapuram — are comparatively dry this month, though hot. Beach time in Goa and the Konkan is limited: rough seas, red-flag swimming and many shacks shut.

Pack for rain and for altitude in the same bag if you are combining the plains with Ladakh. A light rain shell, quick-dry clothing and sandals or waterproof shoes matter more than warm layers in most of the country; add a fleece, hat and sunglasses for Leh, where nights drop near 10 °C and the sun is strong.

Bring insect repellent — the monsoon is mosquito season, and dengue and malaria risk rises with standing water. A small umbrella is more useful than a rain jacket in Indian city rain. Carry a power bank for delays, and keep electronics in a dry bag.

June is similar but the monsoon has not yet reached the northern plains, so Ladakh and Spiti are already good while Delhi and Rajasthan are still extremely hot. August repeats July almost exactly, with Ladakh at its peak and Independence Day closures in Delhi on the 15th. September is the transition: the rain eases in the north late in the month and Rajasthan starts to work again, while Ladakh stays open into early October.
