India in December: what to expect

December splits India in two. The northern plains — Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Amritsar — are cool and mostly dry, with pleasant afternoons and cold nights. The catch is fog: from mid-December into January, dense morning fog can delay trains and flights out of Delhi by hours, so avoid tight connections before about 10am.

Rajasthan is at its best, sunny by day and cold after sunset — Jaisalmer and Jodhpur desert nights can drop close to freezing, and most hotels have no heating. The Konkan coast and Goa are dry and warm, Kerala is dry and humid, and the far south is comfortable. Tamil Nadu and the east coast run on the opposite rhythm: the north-east monsoon brings rain and occasional cyclones to Chennai and the coast through December, so January–February is the safer window there.

The Himalayan hills are cold but clear; Ladakh and Spiti are deep in winter, with passes closed and temperatures well below zero.

The first three weeks of December are busy but manageable. From about 20 December, domestic holiday travel and foreign winter visitors collide: Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan and the Golden Triangle fill up, beach shacks and heritage hotels charge peak rates, and trains sell out. If your dates are fixed to that week, book transport and accommodation two to three months out.

Early December is the better-value window: same weather, noticeably lower hotel rates outside the resort belts, and easier seats on trains. Note that some restaurants and shops in Goa and Mumbai close on Christmas Day, and 25 December is a normal working day for most of the country.

December is a strong month for festivals and for the wedding season, which runs roughly November to February and fills hotels in Rajasthan and the north on weekends.

Christmas and New Year are widely celebrated in Goa and Kerala, with church services, midnight mass and beach parties. In the northeast, Christmas is a public holiday in Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland. Elsewhere it is a low-key day.

Classical music and dance festivals cluster in the south in December, and Rajasthan's fair calendar continues into the month. Dates shift each year — confirm locally before planning a trip around one.

Rajasthan is the classic December pick: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer are dry and sunny, though you will need a jacket after dark. Kerala and Goa give you beach and backwater weather without the monsoon. Delhi and Agra work well for sightseeing, with the caveat of morning fog and poor air quality that lingers from November.

If you want the south without rain, choose Kerala and Karnataka over Tamil Nadu. If you want mountains, the Himalayan hill stations are cold but clear; Ladakh is effectively closed to road travel.

Pick one region. A December trip that tries to combine Rajasthan, Kerala and the northeast spends most of its time in airports.

Pack for two climates if you are covering the north and the coast: light layers and a warm jacket for Rajasthan and Delhi nights, plus beach clothes for Goa and Kerala. A scarf or buff helps with dust and smog in the north. Comfortable closed shoes matter more than sandals for monuments and temple floors.

Bring a universal adapter (India uses type C, D and M plugs), a power bank for long train journeys, and any prescription medicine in its original packaging. Cash in small notes is still useful for autos, chai and tips.

November is similar but with Diwali crowds and Delhi's worst smog; January is equally good and slightly cooler. February is often called the best all-round month. October is a step down in the north but fine in the south.
