  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • Taiwan ↗Check visa-exemption length, passport validity and the online arrival card (TWAC) on the official sites before you fly.
  • Taiwan ↗An EasyCard (or iPASS) covers MRT, buses, local trains and many convenience-store purchases; buy one at the airport or a station.
  • Taiwan ↗When a local government declares a typhoon day, transport and sights can close for the day; follow the official notice, not the forecast alone.

Hsinchu is Taiwan's oldest city in the north and the country's semiconductor town, so it has business hotels above its weight and a compact old centre around the East Gate. Sights are thin for a leisure trip; the real reason to sleep here is the Neiwan branch line, the Hakka hill country and Hsinchu County's mountains, which are awkward as day trips from Taipei.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable between the TRA station, East Gate and the temple. City buses cover the suburbs but run infrequently; taxis wait at the station and department stores rather than cruising. The THSR station is in Chupei, linked by the Liujia TRA line and a shuttle.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Neiwan

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

TRA Neiwan line from Hsinchu station, about 1 h

Old street, Hakka food and river walk; go early, the small train fills up.

Zhenxibao

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Neiwan line to Hexing, then taxi or a long walk uphill

Hill village with narrow lanes; check transport back before you go.

Smangus

overnight

Door to door: 3–4 h

Bus or car via Jianshi, mountain road

Too far for a day return; sleep in the village and book ahead.

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

TRA to Taipei Main, 1–1.5 h, or THSR from Chupei, about 30 min

Easy as a half-day out, but Taipei deserves its own base.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Station and East Gate

Walk to the old town, City God Temple food and the TRA station; best for one night without a car.

Guangfu Road / Science Park

Business hotels with larger rooms; 10–15 min by taxi to the centre, near the zoo and Eighteen Peaks.

Chupei (Zhubei)

Around the THSR station; use it only if you arrive or leave by high-speed rail.

Watch out

Safety

Hsinchu is a safe, low-crime city. The real issues are the winter wind, scooter traffic when you cross, and mountain roads in typhoon season: check conditions before any county trip.
  • The winter wind off the strait is strong and makes the city feel much colder than the temperature suggests.
  • The THSR station is not in Hsinchu: allow 30 min by taxi or the Liujia line plus a walk.
  • Many small eateries close one or two weekdays and sell out by mid-afternoon.
  • Typhoon season runs roughly Jul–Sep; check warnings before mountain trips.
