Holbrook

Stop for 2–4 hours on the Hume Highway: the submarine and the pottery museum are the reason. One night only if you are breaking the Sydney–Melbourne drive.

Holbrook is a Hume Highway service town between Sydney and Melbourne, known for the preserved upper casing of HMAS Otway, a submarine parked in a park beside the road. The highway now bypasses the centre, so traffic has to choose to exit. Three small museums, two bakeries and a handful of motels make it a solid half-day break or a cheap overnight on the long drive.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The town centre is flat and walkable in about 10 minutes end to end. A car is needed for anything beyond Albury Street; the Hume Highway bypass sits east of the centre, so exit and rejoin via the signed ramps.

Albury Street (main street)

Motels and the two museums within a short walk; best if you arrive on foot or want dinner nearby.

Hume Highway service cluster

Fuel, 24 h minimart and the motor village behind the Ampol; easiest for a late arrival with a car.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are highway fatigue, summer heat and wildlife on rural roads at dawn and dusk.
  • The Hume Highway bypasses the town: you must exit deliberately, and the next fuel is 30–60 min away in either direction.
  • The IGA closes by 17:00–19:00; after that only the 24 h Ampol minimart has food.
  • Summer days regularly pass 35 °C (95 °F); carry water if you walk between the museums.
  • Kangaroos and wombats on rural roads at dawn and dusk.
