District 1 splits into two moods. Around Bến Thành Market and the Nguyễn Huệ walking street you get the riverfront, the big hotels and the evening promenade. A few blocks west, Phạm Ngũ Lão and Bùi Viện are the hostel and bar zone: cheapest beds, loudest nights, endless tour and bus-ticket offices. Both are walkable to the main sights, so the difference is noise and price rather than location.
District 3 is where many repeat visitors end up. It is a normal city district with markets, coffee shops and no bar strip, and the walk into District 1 is short enough to do twice a day. District 2's Thảo Điền is a different city in feel: low buildings, international schools, brunch places and serviced apartments, popular with people staying a month or more. You will use Grab or taxis more.
Near the airport, Phú Nhuận and Bình Thạnh make sense for a one-night stop before a flight or a Mekong Delta departure. District 5, the Chợ Lớn area, is the place for Chinese-Vietnamese temples, herbal shops and market food, at lower prices and with fewer tourists.
Practical checks before you book: confirm the room has a window (many cheap city rooms do not), check whether the price includes breakfast and taxes, and look at whether the hotel is on a main road or a hem (alley). Alleys are quieter; main roads near Bùi Viện are not.
