Ho Chi Minh City airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Tân Sơn Nhất sits about 8 km north of District 1, so the transfer is short but traffic-dependent. A metered taxi or a Grab car is the default: 25–45 minutes and roughly ₫150,000–250,000 (about US$6–10) in 2026, plus a small airport exit fee. Buses 109 and 152 are the budget route at a fraction of that, but they are slower, stop running in the evening and are awkward with big bags.

If your flight lands after dark, or you are arriving with family and luggage, pre-book a car or use the ride-hailing apps rather than negotiating at the kerb. If you land mid-morning with a backpack, the bus is a reasonable gamble.

Taxis: use a meter. Mai Linh and Vinasun are the two brands most often recommended, and both run meters. At the taxi rank outside the terminal, staff will direct you to a car; confirm the meter is running before you get in. The airport adds a surcharge to the fare, so the total will be slightly above the meter reading. If a driver quotes a flat price far above ₫250,000, walk to the next car or open Grab instead.

Ride-hailing: Grab and Be both work at SGN. You set the pickup point in the app — usually the designated ride-hailing zone outside the terminal — and pay the fixed price shown. This removes the negotiation and the language barrier, and it is the easiest option if you have no cash yet.

Buses: bus 109 runs between the airport and the city centre, and the yellow 152 bus is the cheapest route used by locals. Both are slow in traffic, run limited hours, and expect you to handle your own bags. They are a good choice if you are travelling light, arriving in daylight and staying near the route.

Motorbike taxis: Grab Bike is fast and cheap for one person with a small bag, but you are on the back of a motorbike in dense traffic. Only take it if you are comfortable with that, and wear the helmet provided.

No train: there is no rail link from Tân Sơn Nhất. Vietnam's main rail line runs through the city centre at Ga Sài Gòn, which is a separate trip from the airport. If you are heading onward by train, get to the city first, then to the station.

Budget about ₫150,000–250,000 (US$6–10) for a taxi or Grab car to District 1 in 2026, plus the airport exit fee. A private transfer or hotel car is usually ₫250,000–500,000. The bus is the outlier at roughly ₫6,000–20,000, and Grab Bike sits in between at ₫60,000–100,000.

Cash is still the default for taxis and buses. Carry small notes — a ₫500,000 note for a ₫200,000 fare invites a slow search for change. Grab and Be let you pay by card in the app, which is useful on arrival.
