Ho Chi Minh City in October: what to expect

October sits in the tail of the southern wet season. Expect a hot, humid day that builds to a heavy shower or thunderstorm, usually in the afternoon or early evening, then clears. The downpour can be intense for an hour and leave streets briefly flooded, but it rarely wipes out a whole day. Mornings are often the dry, usable half.

Temperatures barely move through the month: lows around 24 °C and highs around 32 °C, with humidity that makes midday feel heavier than the number suggests. Air conditioning, shade and an early start matter more than a jacket. This is not the cool, grey weather the north gets in October.

October is one of the quietest months in Ho Chi Minh City. The domestic holiday calendar is empty, the rainy-season reputation keeps some travellers away, and the big Christmas-and-New-Year wave has not started. You will still find tour groups at the War Remnants Museum and the Central Post Office, but hotel and tour capacity is comfortable.

Prices follow the crowds. City hotels, which are already cheaper than Hanoi's old-quarter rooms, sit near their yearly floor in October, and flights into Tan Son Nhat are easier to book at short notice than in December. This is a good month to upgrade a room category for the price of a standard one in high season.

The catch is elsewhere in the country: October is the flood peak on the central coast, so Hội An and Huế are both wet and, when flooding hits, disruptive. If your trip is city-focused or Mekong-focused, October is a bargain. If it is a north-to-south run, treat the centre as optional.

October has no national public holiday in Vietnam, so the city runs on its normal rhythm and you avoid the transport crush of 2 September or Tết. The one festival that touches the month is Mid-Autumn, which falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month — around mid-September in recent years, but its lantern season can spill into early October depending on the lunar calendar (check the year's date).

In Ho Chi Minh City the Mid-Autumn centre of gravity is Chợ Lớn in District 5, where lanterns, mooncakes and lion dances fill the streets around Hà Tôn Quyền and Lương Nhữ Học. It is an evening event, busy with local families, and free to walk.

Beyond that, look for the city's regular cultural calendar: theatre, water-puppet and music performances, plus museum exhibitions. Dates shift yearly, so confirm anything specific locally rather than planning a trip around it.

Plan October days around the rain: outdoor sights in the morning, indoor sights when the afternoon shower hits. Start with the central district — the Central Post Office, Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica (check access, it has been under restoration), the War Remnants Museum and the Reunification Palace — all close together and easy to combine with a café stop.

For markets and atmosphere, Bến Thành Market is the tourist-facing one; Chợ Lớn in District 5 is the more local, Chinese-Vietnamese half of the city and worth half a day, especially around Mid-Autumn. The Mekong Delta day trips from the city work in October, though you should expect wet, muddy paths and a shorter boat ride if the river is high.

If you want a beach, Phú Quốc and the far south are still wet in October but improving late in the month; Vũng Tàu, about two hours away, is a common weekend escape for locals and stays warm. Skip the central coast this month unless you are flexible on dates.

Pack for heat and water, not for cold. Light, quick-drying clothes beat cotton; a thin rain shell or compact umbrella lives in your day bag all month. Footwear should survive a flooded pavement — sandals or fast-drying trainers rather than leather shoes.

Add a small dry bag or zip pouch for your phone and passport on boat and market days, and mosquito repellent for evenings, especially near the river and in the delta. Sunscreen still matters between showers: the UV is strong even under cloud.

October is the last full wet-season month in the south. November eases off and is a better all-round choice if you also want the centre; December is the driest, busiest and most expensive. September is wetter and sits in the tail of the northern storm season.
