Best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City: weather, crowds and events by month

Ho Chi Minh City sits in the southern zone: hot all year, with a dry season from December to April and a wet season from May to November. The wet season is not a washout. Rain usually arrives in the afternoon and lasts one to two hours, then the city dries off and the evening works normally. The dry season is the reverse trade-off: reliable weather, higher hotel rates and more visitors.

Use the table to pick a month, then check the holiday calendar before you book flights. Tết and the 30 April–1 May long weekend move prices and fill transport more than the weather does.

This is the window most visitors want. Skies are mostly clear, humidity is at its lowest for the year, and the afternoon downpours stop. December and January are the most comfortable months for walking District 1, the riverside and Chợ Lớn. February stays dry but Tết can close shops and restaurants for three to seven days around the lunar new year, and domestic transport sells out a week either side.

March is the best single month for most travellers: dry, warm rather than punishing, and past the Tết squeeze. April and May are the hottest stretch, often above 35 °C before the rains break, and the 30 April–1 May long weekend sends domestic travellers to the coast — book beds and buses early if you plan to leave the city.

Rain builds through May and peaks from June to September. In practice this means a heavy shower most afternoons, sometimes with brief street flooding in low-lying parts of the city, then clear skies again. Mornings are usually dry, so sightseeing, markets and day trips still work; plan indoor stops — museums, cafés, malls — for the late afternoon.

September and October are the wettest and the quietest. Hotel rates and flights drop, and the main sights are far less crowded. If you can tolerate a daily soaking and build slack into any Mekong Delta or Mũi Né trip, this is the best value window of the year. November is a transition month: rain eases, prices stay moderate, and the city is pleasant again.

Peak demand runs from mid-December through February, driven by Christmas, New Year and Tết, plus the dry-season weather. Expect the highest hotel rates and the fullest flights. Shoulder months — March, April and November — give dry or near-dry conditions with more availability.

The two dates that change plans most are Tết (lunar new year, around early February; 6 February 2027) and the 30 April–1 May long weekend. Tết closes many independent restaurants and shops for several days and fills trains, buses and domestic flights; the April–May holiday does the same for beach destinations. If your dates are fixed, book transport and accommodation before anything else.

Many family-run restaurants and shops close for three to seven days, prices rise, and trains, buses and flights sell out a week either side. Some travellers enjoy the quieter streets and flower markets; others find the city half-shut. Check the exact dates for your year before booking.

Other dates to know: Hùng Kings' Day (around mid-April), Reunification Day and Labour Day on 30 April–1 May, National Day on 2 September, and Mid-Autumn Festival in September or October, when District 5 and Chợ Lớn fill with lanterns in the evening. Vietnam Culture Day, added as a public holiday in 2026 on 24 November, may close some offices and museums — check the arrangement for your year.

Pack for heat and humidity whatever month you choose: light, quick-drying clothes, a refillable water bottle, sun protection and a compact rain shell or poncho for May to November. A light layer helps in air-conditioned cafés and on overnight buses. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything — you will walk a lot in District 1 and around the markets.

Build your days around the rain rather than against it. Do outdoor sightseeing and day trips in the morning, keep one indoor option for the afternoon, and leave a spare day if you are heading to the Mekong Delta or the coast. If you are combining the south with the north or centre, remember Vietnam has no single good season: February to April is the best compromise for a north-to-south trip.
