Ho Chi Minh City in December: what to expect

December sits in the southern dry season. The monsoon that soaks the city from May to November has ended, so instead of a daily afternoon downpour you get long stretches of hot, hazy sun and only the occasional short shower. It is not cool: this is tropical heat, and the humidity keeps it sticky even after dark.

Days are hot and best used early. Plan temples, markets and walking for the morning, then retreat to air conditioning, a café or a mall between about 12:00 and 15:00. Evenings are pleasant enough for the riverfront and rooftop bars. The numbers below are 2026 estimates from the pattern of recent years — treat them as a guide, not a forecast, and check a live forecast before you pack.

Early December is manageable. From roughly the third week the city fills for Christmas and New Year: international visitors arrive, expats host family, and domestic travellers take short breaks. Hotels in District 1 and around the backpacker area raise rates and fill first; flights into Tan Son Nhat get expensive and sell out on the peak dates.

Prices for food and drink barely move — a bowl of phở or a bánh mì costs about the same in December as in June. The jump is in accommodation and airfare. If your dates are fixed around 24 December to 2 January, book both weeks ahead rather than days.

December is a normal working month in Vietnam — there is no long public holiday, and Tết falls in January or February. The festive activity is commercial and cultural rather than official: shopping streets and hotels put up lights and trees, churches hold Christmas services, and the city counts down to New Year.

Because there is no national holiday, offices, shops and restaurants stay open as usual. That is good news for travellers: you get the holiday atmosphere without the closures that hit Vietnam in February.

Dry, hot weather makes December a good month for the city's outdoor sights and for day trips into the Mekong Delta, where the rice harvest and floating markets are active. It is also a strong month for the southern coast and islands — Phú Quốc and the beaches near Vũng Tàu are at their best now, which is why they fill up over the holidays.

If you are building a longer trip, remember the country's weather is split: December is dry in the south but wet in the centre, so Hội An and Huế are a gamble this month. The north is cool and often grey.

Pack for heat and sun, not for winter. Light, breathable clothing, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen matter more than a jacket. Bring one light layer for heavily air-conditioned cafés, malls and buses, and a compact rain shell for the odd shower.

Add mosquito repellent for evenings, especially if you are heading to the delta, and comfortable shoes you can slip off for temples. If your trip runs into the north, add a jacket — Hanoi and Sa Pa are genuinely cold in December.

December is the first of the south's two best months. January is just as dry and slightly less crowded once the New Year rush passes. November is the tail of the wet season — cheaper and quieter, with a real chance of afternoon rain. February brings Tết, when much of the city closes for several days.
