Historic High Country is the mountain north of Atlanta: gold-rush towns, the southern start of the Appalachian Trail, lakes and 400-plus caves. Sights sit 30–90 minutes apart on two-lane roads, so pick one base — Dahlonega or Blue Ridge — and day-trip the rest. A car is the only practical way around.
