North Carolina runs about 800 km west to east, and the three regions do not combine well in a short trip. The mountains (Asheville, Blue Ridge Parkway) suit hikers and fall foliage; the Piedmont (Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Greensboro) suits city time, universities and basketball; the Coastal Plain (Outer Banks, Wilmington) suits beaches and ferries. Public transport outside Charlotte and the Triangle is thin, so a rental car is the practical default.
