Tennessee runs west to east for about 700 km: Memphis on the Mississippi, Nashville in the middle, Knoxville and the Smoky Mountains in the east. I-40 links all three. Two time zones split the state — Knoxville and Chattanooga are Eastern, the rest Central — so add an hour when driving east. Fly into MEM or BNA; there is no useful rail beyond Memphis.
