Harrietville

Give Harrietville one night as a Great Alpine Road stop between Bright and Mount Hotham; two nights only if you are walking or skiing from here.

Harrietville is a small village on the Great Alpine Road, 20 km from Bright and 20 km from Mount Hotham, at the foot of the climb to the ski fields. It is a fuel-and-chains stop, a base for Feathertop walks in summer and a snow-season dormitory in winter. There is no petrol here, so fill up in Bright before you climb.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

You need a car. The village is a short strip on the Great Alpine Road and everything is walkable once parked, but Bright, Mount Hotham and the trailheads are 20 km or more away. In winter, chains must be carried past Harrietville towards Mount Hotham and can be hired in the village.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet alpine village and generally safe. The real risks are winter road ice, snow-chain rules, summer bushfire and the lack of fuel: fill up in Bright and check conditions before you climb.
  • No fuel in Harrietville: fill up in Bright before the climb to Mount Hotham and Dinner Plain.
  • Snow chains are required in winter on the road beyond the village; hire them here or in Bright.
  • The Alps Link bus runs only Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, so a car-free trip needs planning around those days.
  • Bushfire risk in summer: check the fire danger rating and local alerts before walking or driving.
