Scams and watch-outs
- No fuel in Harrietville: fill up in Bright before the climb to Mount Hotham and Dinner Plain.
- Snow chains are required in winter on the road beyond the village; hire them here or in Bright.
- The Alps Link bus runs only Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, so a car-free trip needs planning around those days.
- Bushfire risk in summer: check the fire danger rating and local alerts before walking or driving.
A quiet alpine village and generally safe. The real risks are winter road ice, snow-chain rules, summer bushfire and the lack of fuel: fill up in Bright and check conditions before you climb.
