Dinner Plain is a small alpine village above the snowline on the Great Alpine Road, 20 km from Mount Hotham and about 4.5 h by road from Melbourne. Buildings are timber and green-grey by planning rule, the village is freehold land, and it works as a dormitory for Hotham skiers in winter and a walking and cycling base in summer. There is no fuel and no ATM here, so arrive stocked and fuelled.

Getting around

The village is small and walkable, but you need a car to reach Mount Hotham, Omeo or Harrietville. In winter a bus runs between Dinner Plain and Mount Hotham, leaving from the Transit Center and opposite the Big D ski lift. Snow chains must be carried after Harrietville or Omeo between 1 June and 10 October and may have to be fitted on the highway.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are winter driving, snow chains, no fuel and no ATM, and phone coverage that depends on your network.
  • No fuel at Dinner Plain or Mount Hotham: fill up in Harrietville or Omeo.
  • No ATM or bank in the village; the nearest ATM is at Mount Hotham. Cards and EFTPOS work at the supermarket and most cafes.
  • Vodafone has no coverage here; Telstra and Optus do.
  • Winter driving needs chains and patience; the Great Alpine Road can close in bad weather.
  • Altitude is modest but walks feel harder if you have just come up from sea level.
