Hanoi in June: what to expect

June is part of Hanoi's wet season and one of its hottest months. The parent country data rates the north as wet in June: expect humid heat by afternoon and air that feels heavier than the number suggests. Rain usually arrives as a short, intense downpour rather than all-day drizzle, so a morning of sightseeing is often possible before the sky opens.

The bigger risk is late in the month, when the tropical storm season begins to build across the north. Most days are still usable, but a storm warning can close Hạ Long Bay to overnight cruises and ground domestic flights for a day. Keep one spare day at the end of any northern trip in June.

Crowds are medium in June, matching the country-level rating. Vietnamese schools are on summer holiday, so domestic families travel, and the Old Quarter, Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the weekend night market are busy in the evenings. It is not the Tết crush, but popular hotels and tours can fill several days ahead.

Prices sit in the middle band. Rooms are cheaper than the October-to-April high season and much cheaper than Tết, and tours are rarely sold out, but you will not find the deep low-season discounts of a grey January. Book Hạ Long cruises and any overnight train a few days ahead.

June has no national public holiday in Vietnam, so the month is quiet on the official calendar. The regular Hanoi rhythm continues: the weekend night market around Hoàn Kiếm Lake, evening food streets, and the city's theatre and water-puppet shows running for tourists. Schedules change, so check locally before you build an evening around one.

Base yourself in the Old Quarter and treat the mornings as your sightseeing window: Hoàn Kiếm Lake, the Temple of Literature, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex and the train street. When the afternoon rain hits, move indoors to the museums, cafés and the city's food scene — bún chả, phở and cà phê trứng are all weather-proof.

For day trips, Ninh Bình's karst valleys and Tam Cốc boat rides are a few hours south by road (check) and work in the wet season, though paths get muddy. Hạ Long Bay is the gamble: cruises run, but a storm warning can cancel them, so keep your dates flexible or book it late in the trip when you can see the forecast. Sa Pa and Ha Giang are in the wet northern stretch in June, so trekking conditions are unreliable (check).

Pack for heat and water. Light, quick-drying clothes beat cotton, and a compact rain jacket or umbrella is essential rather than optional. Bring sandals that can get wet, a dry bag for your phone and passport, and mosquito repellent for the evenings. A light layer helps on air-conditioned buses, trains and in the cinema.

May is rated caution at country level too: heat builds in Hanoi while the central coast is at its beach best. July and August stay caution, with the north hot and storm-prone and Hạ Long cruises at risk of cancellation. If dry weather matters most, aim for October or November instead.
