Hanoi in April: what to expect

April is the tail of Hanoi's dry season and the start of the warm build-up. Days are usually bright and dry, humidity is climbing but not yet at summer levels, and the grey drizzle of January and February is gone. Expect roughly 27 °C in the afternoon and 21 °C at night — warm enough for a T-shirt by day, pleasant enough for a light jacket after dark.

Rain is possible but rarely a lost day: showers tend to be short. The bigger variable is heat late in the month, when afternoons can push past 30 °C and the old quarter feels sticky by mid-afternoon. Morning and evening are the comfortable windows for walking.

April sits in the medium band for both crowds and prices. Hotels in the old quarter and around Hoàn Kiếm have room, tours run at normal rates, and you can usually book a day or two ahead. The exception is the 30 April – 1 May long weekend, when Reunification Day and Labour Day combine into a domestic travel peak: Hạ Long cruises, beach towns and flights sell out, and prices rise.

If your dates are fixed around that weekend, book transport and beds as early as you can. If they are flexible, the first three weeks of April are the calmer, cheaper choice.

Two public holidays land in or near April. Hùng Kings' Day falls on the 10th day of the third lunar month — around 16 April in 2027, so check the exact date — and is a national holiday with temple crowds at Phú Thọ and busier domestic flights around the long weekend. Then 30 April (Reunification Day) and 1 May (Labour Day) create the biggest domestic travel weekend of the spring.

Beyond the holidays, April is a normal working month in Hanoi: no festival shuts the old quarter, and museums, cafés and street kitchens run as usual.

April is the month to use Hanoi as a base and get out into the north. Hạ Long Bay and Cát Bà are at their most reliable before the summer storm season, Ninh Bình's limestone valleys are green and dry, and Sa Pa is warming up without the winter chill. Book any overnight boat or trek before the long weekend.

Pack for warm days and mild nights: light cotton or linen, a light jacket or overshirt for evenings and air-conditioned buses, and comfortable shoes for uneven pavements. A compact rain shell covers the odd April shower without weighing you down.

Add sun protection — a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen — because the April sun is stronger than the temperature suggests, and a refillable bottle for the walk between sights.
