Hanoi in March: what to expect

March is the hinge between Hanoi's cool, damp winter and its hot, humid summer. The month starts close to February: grey skies, a chill in the evening, drizzle that can last a morning. By the last week you notice the shift — afternoons feel warm, humidity climbs, and the first proper hot days arrive.

The rain is usually light and intermittent rather than a washout. You get misty mornings, a few hours of brightness, then cloud again. The classic Hanoi nuisance is nồm: a spell of very humid air, often in late February and March, when cold floors and walls sweat and laundry refuses to dry. It does not stop you sightseeing, but it makes the city feel clammy.

Practical effect: outdoor plans are fine, but keep them flexible. Hạ Long Bay day trips and cruises run normally in March; visibility on the water is often soft and hazy rather than crisp. Sa Pa and the far northern loop are still cool, with cold nights at altitude.

March is one of the calmer months in the north. The Tết rush — when trains, buses and flights sell out a week either side of Lunar New Year — is finished by early March, and the next domestic peak (30 April – 1 May) is still weeks away. Weekends in the Old Quarter are busy with Vietnamese visitors, but midweek is comfortable.

Prices follow the same curve. Hotels in the Old Quarter and around Hoàn Kiếm sit near their low-season rates, and you can usually book a few days ahead rather than months. Tours to Hạ Long, Ninh Bình and Sa Pa have space, though the best-reviewed overnight cruises still fill on weekends.

If your dates are flexible, aim for a Tuesday-to-Thursday stay: cheaper rooms, shorter queues at the mausoleum and the Temple of Literature, and easier tables at the small bún chả and phở spots.

March has no national public holiday, which is exactly why it is a good month to move around. The main fixed event is International Women's Day on 8 March, when offices and schools give flowers and small gifts; it is a normal working day for travellers and shops stay open.

The bigger seasonal marker is the tail of the spring festival season. Pagodas around Hanoi — the Perfume Pagoda complex in particular — draw pilgrim crowds on weekends through the lunar first and second months, which usually runs into March. Expect buses, boats and tour desks to be busier on those weekends.

Check local listings closer to your dates for gallery openings, the Hanoi Opera House programme and any city-run events; dates move year to year.

In the city, March suits walking. The Old Quarter, Hoàn Kiếm Lake, the Temple of Literature and the Imperial Citadel are all comfortable at 23–26 °C, and you are not fighting the July heat or the winter drizzle of January. Do the outdoor sights in the morning, when the light is best and the mist has not yet thickened.

Out of town, this is a strong month for the north. Ninh Bình's limestone valleys and Tam Cốc boat rides are green and quiet. Hạ Long Bay cruises run on schedule — March is outside the July–September storm window when sailings get cancelled. Sa Pa and Hà Giang are still cool, with cold nights and possible mist, so pack a warm layer if you go north.

If you want a beach, March is not the north's month. Fly south or to the central coast, where March is at its best, or keep the trip to the north and save the sand for another visit.

Pack for two seasons in one month. A light waterproof shell handles the drizzle and the nồm damp; a couple of long-sleeve tops and one warmer layer cover cool evenings early in the month. By late March you will want short sleeves and breathable fabrics in the afternoon.

Footwear matters more than usual: drizzle and humid pavements mean shoes that dry overnight. Add a small umbrella, which you can also buy cheaply in the Old Quarter, and a dry bag or zip pouch for your phone on boat trips.

If you are heading to Sa Pa or Hà Giang, add a fleece or light down jacket and long trousers — nights at altitude can drop close to 10 °C or below.

February is cooler and greyer, and Tết can shut businesses for several days — good if you want the holiday atmosphere, risky if you want everything open. January is the coldest, dampest city month, with a jacket needed most days.

April is warmer and drier and still a good pick, but the 30 April – 1 May long weekend fills beaches, Hạ Long boats and domestic flights, so book early. May turns properly hot and humid in Hanoi, and the central coast becomes the better beach choice.
