Hanoi in July: what to expect

July sits in the middle of northern Vietnam's hot, wet summer. Days are humid and sticky, with highs usually in the low-to-mid 30s °C and nights that rarely drop below the mid-20s °C, so air conditioning matters more than a jacket. Rain arrives as short, heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzle: a storm can dump a lot of water in an hour, flood a lane in the Old Quarter, then clear within 30–60 minutes.

The bigger variable is storms. July is early in the northern storm season, which peaks in August and September, and Hạ Long Bay cruises and island ferries can be suspended when warnings are issued. Build a spare day around any overnight cruise. UV is strong even under cloud, and heat exhaustion is a real risk if you walk the Old Quarter at midday.

July is high season in Hanoi for domestic travel: Vietnamese school holidays run through the summer, and families move between the capital, the northern coast and the central beaches. Expect the Old Quarter, Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the Temple of Literature to be busy in the morning and evening, and weekend trains and flights to the coast to sell out days ahead.

Prices stay medium rather than peak. City hotels and hostels are mid-range and negotiable; the pressure is on transport and tours. Hạ Long overnight cruises, Sa Pa treks and sleeper trains book out early in July, so reserve those before you arrive. Booking a Hanoi hotel with a pool or strong air conditioning is worth the extra cost this month.

July has no major national public holiday in Vietnam, so the month is defined by summer rather than festivals. Hanoi's cultural calendar keeps running: water puppet shows at the Thăng Long theatre, the weekend night market around Hoàn Kiếm Lake, and exhibitions and concerts in the city's museums and cultural centres. Check current listings locally, as dates shift.

If you are in the north on the 27th, you may see small commemorative events for War Invalids and Martyrs' Day, a solemn national observance rather than a tourist festival. Otherwise, plan around the weather: outdoor events are usually evening affairs.

Structure July days around the heat and the rain. Do the Old Quarter, Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the Temple of Literature early, before 10am, then retreat indoors for museums, cafés or a water puppet show during the hottest hours. Late afternoon and evening are good again for the lake, the night market and street food.

For day trips, Ninh Bình and the northern countryside are green and dramatic in July but muddy and hot; start early and carry rain gear. Hạ Long Bay is the big question mark: cruises run, but storm warnings can cancel sailings with little notice, so keep a buffer day. If you want drier weather, the central coast around Đà Nẵng and Hội An is in its hot, mostly dry window in July, and the south is wet but warm.

Pack for heat, humidity and sudden rain. Light, quick-drying clothing beats cotton; a compact umbrella or light rain shell lives in your day bag. Bring strong sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle, and expect to change clothes more than once a day. A dry bag or plastic sleeve protects your phone in a downpour.

For Hạ Long or Sa Pa add a light layer for air-conditioned buses and boats, plus motion-sickness tablets if you are prone. Mosquito repellent is useful in the evening, especially near water.

June is similar but slightly less storm-prone; August is the northern storm peak, so keep a spare day around any Hạ Long night. September usually improves late in the month as the north dries out. If dry, cooler weather matters most, aim for October to November or March to April instead.
