Guyana itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Guyana does not reward improvisation. The interior is reached by light aircraft or rough roads, lodges sit far apart, and seats on the small planes fill up in the dry season. Pick a length, then a route, then book the transport before the beds.

The routes below run in one direction: Georgetown out to the falls and forest, then back from Annai, Karanambu or Lethem. Flying one leg and driving the other works where the road is open, and cuts both cost and time.

Three nights in Georgetown covers arrival, St George's Cathedral, Stabroek Market and the Botanical Gardens manatees, plus the Kaieteur day flight. Kaieteur is a day trip by small plane, not an overnight stop, and the flight can slip for weather or aircraft reasons, so leave the following day loose.

Then fly or drive to Iwokrama for two nights: the canopy walkway and rainforest. Surama, a Makushi community lodge, is two more nights. Fly out from Annai back to Georgetown. This is the shortest version that still feels like Guyana rather than an airport layover.

Add Karanambu to the 7-day route for giant otters and anteaters, with three nights there. The North Rupununi savannah is a different landscape from Iwokrama's forest, and the extra days remove the rushed feeling of moving camp every 48 hours.

Fly back from Karanambu or Lethem. If you exit via Lethem, you can continue overland into Brazil, but check border and road conditions before committing.

Two weeks lets you push into Rewa for three nights of remote rivers and arapaima fishing, then Karanambu for two and a night in Lethem before flying back to Georgetown. Rewa is best October–March; from April to July, Shell Beach for nesting turtles is the stronger swap.

With three weeks, slow the same loop down rather than adding new stops: an extra night at Iwokrama or Surama, a second Georgetown day, or a Berbice and Bartica detour on the coast. Guyana's distances are the constraint, not the number of places.

Domestic flights are the backbone of any interior itinerary. Schedules are thin, luggage is limited and seats sell out in the dry season, so treat every flight as a fixed appointment and build slack around it. Road transfers where they exist are long and rough.

Interior lodges usually sell full packages: transport, meals, guide and activities together. That makes budgeting simpler but booking less flexible, so get quotes early. Georgetown is the arrival base for everything, and most trips start and end there.

The dry season, roughly September to April, is the window for the standard routes: easier flying, better roads and more wildlife visible around water. Rewa is best October–March. April–July brings the turtle nesting season at Shell Beach, which is worth restructuring a two-week trip around.

May to August is wetter and some interior access gets harder; confirm with operators before booking anything in that window.
