Where to stay in Guyana: best areas and types of hotel

Stay in Georgetown for your first and last nights, then move into the interior for the part of the trip you came for. Georgetown is the only place with a real choice of hotels, restaurants and taxis; everywhere else is a lodge or guesthouse tied to a tour, a river or a road.

If you have only a week, two nights in Georgetown plus three or four nights at one interior lodge beats splitting the interior between two lodges — transfers eat a day each way.

Georgetown splits into a few practical zones. Central Georgetown, around the Stabroek Market and the seawall, puts you within walking distance of food and the main sights, but streets are busy and you will still take taxis after dark. Kingston and New Garden are quieter, leafier and close to the museum and botanical gardens, with more mid-range and business hotels. Suburban options near the airport suit early flights but leave you dependent on taxis for everything else.

Outside Georgetown the choice narrows fast. The interior runs on lodges: Iwokrama for the canopy walkway, Surama for the Makushi community lodge, Karanambu for giant otters and anteaters, Rewa for remote rivers and arapaima fishing. These are booked as packages with meals, guided activities and the light-aircraft or road transfer included, so the nightly rate is not comparable to a city hotel.

A third category is the guesthouse and homestay, common in Lethem and smaller river towns. Rooms are simple, often fan-cooled, and the value is the host rather than the building. Ask about generator hours and water supply before you commit.

Georgetown has the widest price range. Budget rooms and hostels sit at the low end, mid-range city hotels in the middle, and the international-standard hotels at the top. Prices are 2026 estimates and move with the season and with oil-and-gas business travel, which can fill the better Georgetown hotels at short notice.

Interior lodges are priced per person per night with meals, guiding and transfers bundled. Treat the figure as a package rate, not a room rate, and confirm what is included — some quote the light-aircraft flight separately.

Book interior lodges three to six months ahead for the dry season, September to April. Capacity is small — a handful of rooms at each lodge — and the same weeks sell to package tours. If you are set on Karanambu or Rewa in peak months, start earlier.

Georgetown hotels are easier, but do not leave the first night to chance in December or around major events; the city's better rooms fill with business travellers. A refundable rate is worth the small premium when your international flight could shift.

Check cancellation terms carefully on lodge packages. Weather, airstrip conditions and aircraft scheduling can force changes, and policies vary between operators.

Power is mixed: types A, B, D and G sockets and both 110 V and 240 V appear, sometimes in the same building. Bring a universal adapter and check before plugging in a laptop.

Buy travel insurance that covers light-aircraft flights and remote-area medical evacuation before you book an interior lodge; standard policies often exclude both.
