GalkacyoGaalkacyo

Half a day to see the market and the city's two sides; overnight only if you have business or a connecting flight.

Galkacyo is a divided city straddling the Puntland–Galmudug boundary, with a working airport and a lively central market. It is not a tourist destination but a practical stop for travellers moving between the two regions or flying in from Mogadishu. Most visitors come for work or family; independent tourism is rare and requires local security advice.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
  • East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
  • East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
  • Somalia ↗Check your own government travel advice for Somalia before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Somalia ↗The federal e-visa for Mogadishu is separate from Somaliland's visa system and may not be recognised in Puntland; confirm which authority controls your arrival point.
  • Somalia ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Somalia before you rely on it.

Getting around

Shared taxis (bajaaj) and private cars; negotiate the fare before getting in. Walking between districts is not recommended without a local guide. The city is compact enough that most trips are short.

Watch out

Safety

Galkacyo is a divided city with active checkpoints. Independent tourism is not recommended; travel only with a local contact or organisation. Petty crime is possible in the market; keep valuables out of sight. The main risk is political instability and the lack of emergency services for foreigners.
  • The city is divided; crossing between Puntland and Galmudug sectors requires passing through checkpoints. Carry ID and know which side you are on.
  • Independent travel without a local contact or security briefing is not advised. Check your government travel advisory before booking.
  • ATMs are scarce; bring enough US dollars cash for your stay.
  • Mobile money (Zaad / EVC Plus) is widely used; a local SIM helps.
