Las Anod

Skip unless you have a specific purpose and vetted security: no scheduled flights, no tourist services, and control of the town has changed hands repeatedly since 2000.

Las Anod is a town of about 400,000 people in Sool, governed in practice by SSC-Khatumo and contested by Puntland and Somaliland since the turn of the millennium. It has almost no visitor infrastructure: a handful of mosques and low hills, hotels that take guests by arrangement, and no scheduled air service. Treat it as a place you reach only with an organisation, a reason and a security plan, not as a stop on a Somalia itinerary.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
  • East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
  • East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
  • Somalia ↗Check your own government travel advice for Somalia before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Somalia ↗The federal e-visa for Mogadishu is separate from Somaliland's visa system and may not be recognised in Puntland; confirm which authority controls your arrival point.
  • Somalia ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Somalia before you rely on it.

Safety

Security risks are high and emergency numbers do not reliably connect here. Rely on professional security advice, avoid travel after dark, and keep your covering embassy informed.
  • Control of the town has shifted between Puntland, Somaliland, Khatumo, SSC and other administrations since 2000; the security situation is fluid.
  • Medical facilities are limited; carry your own essentials and evacuation cover.
  • Home-government travel advice generally warns against travel to this region: read it before you commit.
