Region
Eastern Switzerland
Base in Saint Gallen or on Lake Constance for 2–3 nights; the region is a day-trip cluster, not a hotel-hopping one.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Switzerland ↗Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not the EU: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Switzerland ↗Switzerland is outside the EU customs area: allowances on meat, alcohol and tobacco are strict and checked at borders.
- Switzerland ↗Motorways need a vignette (sticker or e-vignette) before you drive on them.
Eastern Switzerland is the country's lake-and-hills side: Lake Constance shoreline, the Appenzell farm country above it, and Saint Gallen's abbey district in the middle. Distances are short — most of the region is 30–90 minutes by train from Saint Gallen — so one base covers it. Sleep in Saint Gallen for rail links and city evenings, or in a lake village (Romanshorn, Stein am Rhein, Rapperswil) for water and quiet. Skip it entirely if your trip is only Zurich–Lucerne–Interlaken and you have under a week.

- Saint Gallen 2; Appenzell and Lake Constance as day-trips
- 3 nights
- Saint Gallen 2 + Romanshorn or Stein am Rhein 1; add Schaffhausen on the way out
- 4 nights
- Saint Gallen 2 + lake village 2, with Glarus or Sardona as a full day
- Saint Gallen, Appenzell, Schaffhausen and Lake Constance in two days is four half-days of transit.
- Lake Constance ferries and the Rheinfall boats are seasonal — a winter visit loses both.
- Appenzell Innerrhoden holidays close shops and some restaurants; check the date.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Appenzell | Saint Gallen | 50 min | unknown | Trains via Gossau; the village is small — the hills need a bus or a walk. |
| Rheinfall (Schaffhausen) | Saint Gallen | 95 min | unknown | Boat to the rock is seasonal; check before committing. |
| Stein am Rhein | Saint Gallen | 75 min | unknown | Combine with Schaffhausen in one day; the old town takes 2 hours. |
| Rapperswil | Saint Gallen | 70 min | unknown | Better as a Zurich day-trip; the lake crossing by boat is summer-only. |
| Glarus / Sardona | Saint Gallen | 90 min | unknown | Sardona viewpoints need a bus plus walking; a full day, not a half. |
Bags between cities
Luggage forwarding between Swiss stations is usually next-day; the receiving hotel must accept it. For a 2–3 night regional stay, carrying your own bag is simpler.

- Lake Constance shore (Romanshorn, Stein am Rhein)
- Mild and often foggy in November–January; summer thunderstorms build in the afternoon.
- Appenzell and Glarus hills
- Higher and wetter than the lake; snow can sit on the upper trails into April.
May–June and September–early October give the best walking without the July–August crowds; the lake shore is at its busiest in July and August.
