Eastern Kenya runs from the wet Mount Kenya foothills at Meru and Embu out to semi-arid plains at Isiolo, Marsabit and the Somali border. The green western edge is farmland and small towns with a few days' worth of walks and markets; the north and east are long, hot drives with sparse services. Most travellers see it in transit to Samburu or Marsabit, or skip it. Go if you want the road less travelled and can accept slow, rough transport and limited lodging; otherwise spend the days in the Mara, Amboseli or on the coast.
