Dumfries and Galloway is Scotland's southwest corner: a low, green region of ruined castles, abbey stone, forest hills and a shallow Solway coast. Most travellers cross it in five minutes on the train and see a blur. That is fine unless you drive. With a car it becomes a two- to four-night base for Caerlaverock, Sweetheart Abbey, Threave Gardens, Glen Trool and the Mull of Galloway. Without one, the rail loop gives you Lockerbie, Annan and Dumfries, and little else.
