Dubai public transport: tickets, passes and apps

For almost every visitor the answer is a Silver Nol card used pay-as-you-go. It is the cheapest per trip, works on the metro, tram, buses and the water bus, and you top it up at station machines or in the RTA app when the balance drops. There is no need to decide in advance how much you will travel.

Switch to a 1-Day Pass only on a day when you plan four or more separate journeys — a Downtown–Marina–Deira loop, for example. On a normal sightseeing day of two or three rides, the pass costs more than the trips.

Skip the Gold card unless you specifically want the Gold Class carriages at the front of the metro. The ride is the same; you pay a premium per trip for a quieter cabin and a view.

The Nol card is a tap-in, tap-out stored-value card. Buy it at any metro station ticket office or machine, at major bus stations, or at some supermarkets and exchange desks. You tap on the reader at the gate going in and again coming out; the fare is calculated from the zones you crossed. Forgetting to tap out charges the maximum fare for the card.

Contactless bank cards and phones work at metro and tram gates on the same tap-in, tap-out basis. They are convenient for a short stay, but they do not work on RTA buses or the abra, and you cannot load a day pass onto them. If your trip mixes buses and metro, the Nol card is the simpler choice.

Top up at station machines (cash or card), at RTA customer service centres, or through the RTA Dubai app. The app also shows your balance and trip history. Abras on Dubai Creek are the exception: the old wooden boats take cash, roughly AED 1–2, and Nol acceptance is not guaranteed — check before boarding.

Dubai is split into fare zones, and the price of a trip depends on how many you cross, not on distance in kilometres. Most visitor journeys stay inside one or two zones: the airport and Deira in the north, Bur Dubai and Downtown in the middle, the Marina and JBR in the south-west. Crossing from the airport to the Marina is at the top of the band.

In practice, a Silver card trip costs AED 3 for a short hop within one zone and AED 8.50 for a long cross-city ride. That spread is why the day pass only wins on busy days: four short trips at AED 3 still cost less than a pass.

The metro Red Line runs from the airport area through Deira, Bur Dubai and Downtown to the Marina and Jebel Ali. The Green Line covers Deira and Bur Dubai on the creek's two sides. The tram loops the Marina and JBR and connects to the metro at two points.

Dubai International (DXB) has metro stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 on the Red Line. A Silver card trip into the centre, Deira or Downtown takes roughly 15–40 minutes depending on your stop, and costs at the top of the zone band because you cross several zones. Buy or top up a Nol card at the station before you go through the gates.

The metro does not serve Al Maktoum (DWC). From DXB, a taxi or ride-hailing car to Downtown or the Marina is the alternative when you land after the last train or carry heavy bags; expect AED 25–60 across central Dubai plus airport surcharges.

Terminal 3 is the larger Emirates terminal and has the most frequent metro access. If you arrive at Terminal 2, you need a shuttle or taxi to reach a metro station — check the signs on arrival.

Travel outside 07:30–09:30 and 17:00–20:00 if you can. The metro is busy but frequent; the roads are the slow part. Friday mornings are quieter on the metro, and Sunday starts later, from about 08:00.

There is no eating or drinking on the metro and tram, and fines are issued. Gold Class and women-and-children carriages are marked on the platform and on the train; standing in the wrong one draws a fine. Keep your Nol card away from your phone case if it holds a bank card, or the gate may read the wrong one.

For a short trip, a contactless bank card is fine for the metro alone. For anything involving buses, the abra or a day pass, buy the Silver Nol card on day one and top it up as you go.
