3 days in Dubai: itinerary

Three days in Dubai is a routing problem, not a sightseeing problem. The city spreads along a 40 km coast, and the traffic between the creek, Downtown and the Marina eats an hour if you plan badly. Pick one base for all three nights — Downtown or Business Bay for first-timers, Deira for budget, Marina or JBR for beach time — and group each day by area.

The shape that works: Day 1 in old Dubai and Downtown, Day 2 on the coast or in the desert, Day 3 for the one big indoor sight plus whatever you missed. Book Burj Khalifa and Museum of the Future slots online before you fly; walk-up tickets sell out in peak season and cost more at the desk.

If your dates fall between May and September, cut the outdoor blocks to before 09:00 and after 17:00 and move everything else indoors. If you want Abu Dhabi's Grand Mosque or Louvre plus all of the above, three days is not enough — take four.

Dubai's headline attractions are priced like theme parks, and the cheapest way in is almost always the operator's own website, booked for a fixed time slot. Sunset slots at Burj Khalifa cost more than midday. Museum of the Future releases tickets in windows and sells out days ahead in winter.

Everything else is cheap or free: the abra across the creek, the walk through Al Fahidi, the Dubai Mall fountains, the beaches at JBR and Kite Beach. Taxis are metered and plentiful; the metro is the cheapest way to cover long distances, but it does not reach the Palm or the desert.

Hours shift in Ramadan, when many restaurants screen daytime dining and some attractions run shorter days. Public behaviour rules — dress, alcohol, photography of people — are enforced, so read them before you land.

From Dubai International (DXB) the metro Red Line reaches Downtown, Business Bay and the Marina in 20–50 minutes for a few dirhams; a taxi to Downtown is about 20–30 minutes outside peak traffic. Al Maktoum International (DWC) is far south and almost always a taxi or pre-booked transfer.

Within the city, the metro plus short taxi hops beats driving. The Nol card covers metro, tram and buses. The Palm, Global Village and the desert need a taxi or a tour pickup. Flights from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand mostly land early morning or late night, so plan a light first half-day rather than a booked 09:00 slot.
