The detail
The Metro Red Line is the default for a daytime arrival. It links the airport area to Deira, Bur Dubai, Downtown and, further out, the Marina and JBR. Trains are clean, air-conditioned and signed in English. You need a Nol card before you ride: buy one at the station machines or the information desk, top it up, and tap in and out — check what is sold where you land. Eating and drinking on board are fined, and Gold Class and women-and-children cars are marked — check the signs before you board.
Taxis are metered and easy to find at the official ranks outside arrivals. Expect an airport surcharge on top of the meter, and a higher starting fare from the airport than from the street — check the current surcharge. Drivers take cash and cards; round up to the next AED 5 as a tip. Ride-hailing (Careem, Uber) works at DXB but pick-up points are specific — follow the app's instructions rather than the general taxi signs. Women can ask for a pink-roofed ladies' taxi.
Local buses are the cheapest way in but the slowest, and they only make sense if your hotel sits near a route. You still need a Nol card with balance. Pre-booked transfers cost more than a taxi but fix the price before you fly, which suits groups, late arrivals and anyone landing at DWC, where the Metro does not reach — check DWC options separately.
Two practical notes. First, the Metro does not run around the clock: if you land in the small hours, plan on a taxi. Second, if your hotel is in the Marina or JBR, the Metro ride is long with bags — a taxi is usually worth the extra.
