Djibouti itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Djibouti is small but slow to cross: one road west to Lac Abbé, one road north to Tadjoura and Obock, and a lot of heat in between. Match the trip length to how much driving you will accept, and pick the cool months.

Costs below are 2026 estimates for one person sharing a 4x4 or joining a group excursion, excluding international flights. Solo travellers pay more per day because the vehicle cost is not shared.

This is the trip most first-time visitors should take. Base in Djibouti City, use it for the two big day trips, then sleep one night in the desert and finish on the gulf.

Day 1: arrive, settle in Djibouti City, walk Place Menelik and the European quarter in the late afternoon. Day 2: early start for Lac Assal, back by mid-afternoon. Day 3: whale-shark morning in the Gulf of Tadjoura, rest in the afternoon. Day 4: drive to Lac Abbé, camp. Day 5: sunrise at the chimneys, drive back to Djibouti City. Day 6: road or boat to Tadjoura, afternoon on the waterfront. Day 7: morning in Tadjoura, return to the city for the flight.

Book the Lac Abbé camp and the whale-shark boat before you arrive; both fill in the cool season.

Ten days lets you keep one 4x4 for the whole loop instead of paying per excursion, which is usually cheaper and always simpler.

Keep the 7-day shape, then add Day Forest for cooler hills and juniper, and a night on Moucha island for beaches and snorkelling before flying out. Day Forest is the only part of the country that feels like highland; bring a layer for the evening.

Two weeks covers everything the country offers in one loop, including a night camped near Lac Assal and the Ghoubbet, and the remote north coast at Obock.

Be honest about the trade-off: 14 days is long for Djibouti alone. Many travellers cut the last five nights and take the train to Dire Dawa and Harar in Ethiopia instead, then fly home from Addis Ababa (check schedules and border formalities).

Check current advice for the north coast before committing to Obock; if it is not advisable, swap those nights for more island time or the Ethiopia leg.

Three weeks in Djibouti alone means repeating places or moving very slowly. The better use of the time is Djibouti plus Ethiopia: the full 14-day loop above, then the train west to Dire Dawa and Harar, returning by road or air.

If you stay in Djibouti, use the extra days for diving out of Obock or Tadjoura, a second whale-shark morning, and unhurried time in Djibouti City's markets and cafés. Add rest days: the heat and the driving wear people down faster than the distances suggest.

Every route here needs a 4x4 with a driver or a booked excursion. Self-driving is possible in theory but not worth it for a short trip: navigation to Lac Abbé is by track, and breakdowns in the heat are a real risk.

Buy the e-visa before you fly, carry cash in Djiboutian francs for fuel stops, camps and small hotels, and expect card use to be limited outside Djibouti City.

Pack for heat and dust: hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen, a refillable bottle, and a warm layer for Day Forest and desert nights. Lac Assal is below sea level and the glare is severe by mid-morning.
