How to get to Djibouti: airports, flights and border crossings

Djibouti has one practical gateway: Djibouti–Ambouli International Airport (JIB), south of the capital. It is the airport that handles the country's scheduled international traffic, so plan your itinerary around it (check). There is no second commercial airport worth planning around.

Direct long-haul flights are rare. Most travellers connect once, through Addis Ababa, Dubai, Istanbul, Doha or Paris (check). Which hub you use depends on where you start and what is cheapest that month, so compare the connection rather than the nonstop — there usually isn't one.

Book the whole trip as a single ticket where you can. A self-transfer means re-checking bags and owning the risk of a missed connection, which is a bad trade on a route with few daily options.

By sea, Djibouti is a port city, but whether any scheduled passenger service for tourists runs from Yemen or across the Gulf of Aden is unconfirmed — check before planning around it (check).
