Denver in May: what to expect

May is Denver's transition month. Daytime temperatures usually sit near 20 °C (68 °F), with nights around 6 °C (43 °F) — warm enough for a T-shirt at lunch, cold enough for a jacket after dark. The city sits at about 1,600 m (5,280 ft), so sun feels stronger and the air dries out fast.

Expect roughly 8–10 days with some rain or snow, often short afternoon showers rather than all-day rain. Snow in the city is uncommon but not impossible early in the month; the foothills and passes above 2,500 m can still get fresh snow into late May. Denver's altitude also means the UV index runs high even on cool, cloudy days.

The first three weeks of May are one of the quietest stretches of Denver's year: ski season has wound down, summer families have not arrived, and hotel rates sit below June–August levels. From the Friday before Memorial Day (the last Monday of the month) the summer season opens — rates climb, Interstate 70 westbound backs up on Friday afternoon, and trailhead parking in the foothills fills by mid-morning.

Book a rental car early if you plan mountain day trips; May is when summer inventory is still being absorbed. For city-only trips, light rail from the airport and walkable downtown neighbourhoods mean you can skip the car entirely.

Memorial Day, the last Monday of the month, is the anchor date: a three-day weekend that opens pools, patios and the summer festival calendar. Dates for the events below vary by year — confirm before booking travel around them.

May rewards city days and low-elevation foothills. Downtown Denver, LoDo, RiNo and the museum district are all comfortable on foot or by light rail, and Red Rocks Park is at its best before the summer heat and concert crowds. Garden of the Gods and the Boulder flatirons make easy day trips.

Save the high passes for June or later: Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park and most 3,000 m+ routes typically stay closed into late May or June. Lower trails in the foothills — Chautauqua in Boulder, Roxborough, Golden's North Table Mountain — are usually dry and open.

Pack for two seasons in one day: a light jacket or fleece for evenings, layers for the afternoon, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen for the altitude, and a compact rain shell for the short showers. Comfortable walking shoes handle both city pavements and foothills trails.

If you are heading above 2,500 m, add a warm mid-layer, gloves and a hat — snow and cold wind are still normal up there in May. Bring a refillable water bottle; dry air and altitude dehydrate you faster than the temperature suggests.

April is cooler and snowier, with more closed roads; June brings the high country into play but also the first real crowds and higher prices. July is Denver's hottest and busiest month, with afternoon thunderstorms. If your priority is mountain access, June onwards is better; if it is value and quiet city days, May wins.
