Denver in April: what to expect

April is Denver's second-snowiest month on average, and it is also the month when spring starts winning. A typical day runs cold at dawn, mild and bright by early afternoon, then drops fast after sunset. Snow usually falls as a wet, heavy dump that melts off the pavements within a day or two; the sun at this altitude is strong enough to clear a lawn by lunchtime.

The bigger variable is altitude, not the calendar. Denver sits at about 1,609 m (5,280 ft), so the city can be 17 °C while the foothills 30 minutes west are under snow. Anything above roughly 2,700 m is still winter in April: trails hold snow, some forest roads are gated, and afternoon thunderstorms begin to appear late in the month. UV is high even on cool days — sunscreen matters more here than the temperature suggests.

April is one of the cheapest and quietest months to be in Denver. Ski season is winding down — most resorts target a mid- to late-April closing weekend — so the I-70 corridor empties and downtown hotel rates soften midweek. Weekend rates still jump when there is a home game, a concert at a big venue or a convention in town.

Restaurant queues are short, museum tickets are easy, and you can usually walk into a brewery or a tour without booking. The trade-off is that some seasonal mountain businesses close for a few weeks between ski and summer, and a handful of attractions run shorter hours before the summer season starts. Check opening days for anything outside the city before you drive.

Denver's April calendar is built around sport, beer and the start of the outdoor season. Dates shift every year, so confirm before you build a trip around any one event.

The Colorado Rockies play home games at Coors Field from early April; the ballpark is a 10-minute walk from Union Station and cheap seats are usually available on the day. The Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets finish their regular seasons and can be in the playoffs, which pushes downtown hotel prices up on game nights. Late April brings the first big beer and food festivals of the year, and Earth Day events around the 22nd. In the mountains, the last ski weekends of the season fall in mid to late April.

Treat April as a city-and-foothills month. Downtown and LoDo work in any weather: the Denver Art Museum, the Molly Brown House, Union Station and the brewery districts around RiNo fill a wet day without a car. Red Rocks Park is open year-round and the amphitheatre is walkable even when no show is on; the trail loop there is usually dry by mid-April.

For a snow-free hike, stay low: the plains and foothills trails around Golden, Boulder and Roxborough State Park tend to be clear, while anything above about 2,700 m will still be snowy and muddy. If you want guaranteed snow, the high resorts are still running lifts in early April. If you want guaranteed dry ground, head east or south toward the plains and the Arkansas Valley. Save the big mountain drives for a later trip — the high passes do not open until late May or June.

Pack for two seasons in one day. A light insulated jacket, a rain shell, a warm mid-layer and sunglasses cover almost everything April throws at you. Shoes should handle wet pavement and a little mud; trail shoes beat sandals. Bring sunscreen and lip balm with SPF — the altitude makes a mild-looking day burn faster than a hot one at sea level.

If you plan any time above 2,500 m, add gloves, a hat and waterproof boots, and expect snow on the trail even when Denver is dry. A refillable water bottle matters too: dry air and altitude dehydrate you faster than the temperature suggests.

March is colder and snowier, with spring-break traffic in the mountains and on I-70. May is the better month for most visitors: warmer afternoons, longer days, trails drying out, and still moderate prices before the summer peak. June opens the high country and the big parks, but rates and crowds climb with it.

If your trip is flexible and the mountains are the point, aim for June or later. If you want the city at its cheapest and do not mind carrying a jacket, April is the value pick.
