Denver in March: what to expect

Denver sits at roughly 1,600 m on the western edge of the Great Plains, against the Front Range. March is a transition month: warm, sunny afternoons followed by cold nights, and the city's snowiest month on average. Snow usually arrives in short bursts and melts off the pavement within a day or two, so a single snowy morning rarely ruins a trip.

The bigger issue is the daily swing. A 12 °C afternoon can drop to −3 °C after dark, and a fast cold front can cut 15 °C in a few hours. Wind off the mountains makes it feel colder. Sunshine is plentiful, which is why locals eat outside on a patio in March in a jacket.

In the mountains an hour west, March is still full winter: resorts run at or near full snowpack, and high passes such as Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park stay closed until about late May or June. Plan city days and ski days, not alpine hikes.

March is shoulder season in the city and high season in the mountains, so the two halves of a Denver trip behave differently. Downtown hotels, museums and restaurants are calmer and cheaper than in summer. Ski weekends, especially Saturdays on Interstate 70, are the busiest travel days of the month.

Spring break spreads across several weeks in March depending on the school district, and Colorado ski towns fill during those weeks. Book mountain lodging and any rental car early; downtown Denver can usually be booked a week or two out.

Airfares into Denver International Airport are typically below summer levels, with the cheapest days midweek. The A Line train runs from the airport to Union Station in about 35–45 minutes; check the current fare and timetable.

Two fixed dates shape the month. St Patrick's Day on 17 March brings one of the largest parades in the United States to downtown Denver, with a big crowd around Coors Field and Lower Downtown. The following day, 18 March, is Denver's own civic holiday, and many offices and some businesses close.

Beyond those, the calendar is mostly sport and culture: Colorado Avalanche hockey and Denver Nuggets basketball at Ball Arena, the Denver March Powwow (a long-running Native American gathering, usually held in the third week — check dates), and the Denver Restaurant Week promotion, which has recently run in early March (check dates). Ski resorts stage spring events and closing parties from mid-March into April.

Keep the city as your base and treat the mountains as day trips. In Denver, the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the Molly Brown House and the History Colorado Center all work well on a cold or snowy day. The 16th Street Mall and Larimer Square are walkable in a jacket, and the RiNo district's breweries and food halls are indoor-friendly.

For a sunny afternoon, Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre is about 30 minutes west and free to walk when no event is on. The Denver Botanic Gardens and City Park are pleasant in mild weather but exposed when the wind picks up. Washington Park is the local pick for a run.

Skiers should head for the I-70 corridor: Loveland and Arapahoe Basin are closest, with Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper Mountain and Winter Park a bit further. Leave before 6am on weekends or take a ski shuttle. Non-skiers can ride the Georgetown Loop Railroad or the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway (check seasonal operation) rather than driving high passes.

Pack for two seasons in one day. A light insulated jacket plus a warm mid-layer and a windproof shell covers most March days; add a hat and gloves for evenings and mountain trips. Waterproof shoes or boots are worth the space, because slush and meltwater are common after a snow day.

Sun protection is not optional at this altitude: sunglasses, lip balm and sunscreen for exposed skin. Bring a refillable water bottle, since dry air and altitude dehydrate you faster than you notice. If you plan to ski, rent gear in Denver or at the resort rather than flying with it.

February is colder and snowier, with Presidents' Day weekend the busiest ski travel period. April warms up, the city's patios reopen and the first wildflowers appear on the plains, but high mountain roads are still closed. May is greener and warmer, with Memorial Day opening the summer season, and June is when the alpine trails and Trail Ridge Road finally open.

If your goal is the city and the foothills, March and April are the value months. If your goal is high-country hiking, aim for late June through September. If your goal is skiing, March is one of the best months of the season for snowpack and daylight.
