Best time to visit Denver: weather, crowds and events by month

Denver is a high-plains city at the edge of the Rockies, so the seasons are sharper than the latitude suggests. Spring arrives late and snow can fall into May. Summer is hot and dry at street level but almost every afternoon builds a thunderstorm over the mountains that drifts east. Autumn is the most reliable stretch of the year: warm, bright and dry. Winter swings between mild, brown days and short, heavy snowfalls that melt within a day or two.

Summer heat in Denver is real but manageable: humidity is low, so shade and an early start carry you through. The pattern to plan around is the afternoon storm, which builds over the Front Range between roughly 13:00 and 17:00 and can drop hail in minutes. Locals hike and cycle in the morning and are indoors by mid-afternoon. If you are heading into the mountains, be off exposed ridges by noon.

Winter is milder than most first-time visitors expect. Denver gets around 300 sunny days a year and snow often clears within a day, but the city can also sit under a cold snap for a week. March and April are the snowiest months on average, which surprises people who book spring trips expecting warmth. If you want reliable snow for skiing, aim for late January through March at the resorts, not in the city.

Altitude is the factor most visitors underestimate. At about 1,600 m, alcohol hits harder, sleep is lighter and a short walk uphill feels longer. Drink more water than usual, take the first day easy and save the big hike for day two or three.

Denver's busy season is driven by two things: summer school holidays and the ski season. Late June to August fills downtown hotels, the airport and the mountain trails, and prices peak. Christmas through New Year is the second spike. The quiet windows are January to February in the city, November outside Thanksgiving week, and the first half of December.

For the best combination of weather and value, target the two weeks after Labor Day (early September) or the first half of October. Hotel rates drop noticeably once the summer families leave, the trails thin out and the mountains are still open. Book flights and downtown hotels four to eight weeks ahead for summer and ski-season dates; two to three weeks is usually enough in the shoulder months.

Denver International Airport is a long way from downtown, so factor the transfer into your arrival day rather than treating it as a quick taxi ride.

The calendar matters more in Denver than in most US cities because so much of the trip is outdoors. The National Western Stock Show takes over the city for most of January, which is the one winter week when downtown hotels fill. Spring brings the annual 4/20 gathering around Civic Center Park, which draws a large crowd and closes nearby streets. Summer is festival season, with events most weekends in the parks and stadium concerts at Empower Field and Coors Field.

Baseball at Coors Field runs April to September and is one of the cheapest ways to spend an evening downtown. Football and the Broncos season run September to January. Ski traffic on I-70 is the single biggest practical trap: on winter weekends, westbound queues start before 06:00 on Saturday and eastbound traffic backs up from mid-afternoon on Sunday. If you are driving to the mountains, travel on a weekday or leave very early.

Wildfire smoke is an increasing summer factor across the West. It is unpredictable weeks ahead, but late July to August carries the highest chance of hazy days. If smoke is a concern for you, September is the safer bet.
