How we chose
We picked places you can actually reach in 2026, not the most dramatic terrain. Cuba's parks are small and scattered, domestic flights and long-distance buses are unreliable, and fuel shortages can cancel a transfer the same morning. A walk that needs three connections to reach is a bad recommendation right now.
Second, we weighted towns with beds, food and guides. Viñales, Baracoa and Trinidad all have casas particulares, local guides and a park office or trailhead within walking distance, so a failed bus does not end the trip.
Third, we kept the list honest about difficulty. Most Cuban trails are short, humid and muddy rather than high or technical, and several parks expect or require a local guide. Fees are low but cash-only, and card payments rarely work outside Havana. Treat every price here as a 2026 estimate and confirm on the ground.
Best time
The dry season, November to April, is the walking window: less mud, lower humidity and fewer afternoon downpours. December to March is the most comfortable stretch in the east around Baracoa and Santiago. May to October brings heat, mosquitoes and the hurricane season, and trails in the east can close after storms.
Whatever the month, walk early. Be at the trailhead by 07:00, finish by early afternoon, and treat a 14:00 storm as normal rather than exceptional. Carry more water than you think you need; refills are rare on the trail.
Getting there
Fly into Havana, the only city with regular international flights in 2026, then move west to Viñales or east by road. Viazul buses and shared colectivos are the usual options; book the day before and expect delays. Domestic flights to Santiago and Baracoa run irregularly, so do not build a hike around one.
For the east, Baracoa is reached by a long, slow road from Santiago or Moa, and the route is the first to suffer after storms. For Trinidad and Topes de Collantes, base in Trinidad and arrange transport and a guide through your casa. Keep a buffer day before your flight home.
