The best day trips in Cuba and how to do them without a car

These are the day trips that work from the main bases without a car. Each is reachable by shared taxi, colectivo, organised tour or, in a few cases, a short domestic flight. Distances and times are estimates; check locally the day before, because fuel and vehicle availability change fast.

We ranked trips by whether they can be done in a day from a base the parent Cuba guide already recommends, whether transport exists without a hire car, and whether the trip still makes sense in 2026 conditions of fuel and power shortages.

We dropped anything that needs a long, uncertain drive or a domestic flight that may not run. We kept trips where a colectivo, shared taxi or hotel-organised tour is the normal way locals and visitors travel.

Prices are deliberately left as 'ask locally' because 2026 rates move with fuel supply and are rarely published. Treat any figure you are quoted as a starting point for negotiation, and confirm the return leg before you leave.

The dry season, November to April, is the best window for day trips: firmer roads, less rain and calmer seas for beach and snorkelling days. December to March is the sweet spot for the east, including Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa.

May to October brings heat, humidity and hurricane risk. Storms can close roads and cancel transport for days, which is exactly when a day trip becomes a stranded night. If you travel then, keep trips short and close to your base.

Whatever the month, start early. Shared taxis fill up, tours leave in the morning, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in the wet season.

Without a car, your options are colectivos (shared taxis), tourist taxis, Viazul or other intercity buses, organised tours sold through hotels and casas particulares, and, where they run, domestic flights.

Colectivos are the fastest common option between cities and can be hired for a day trip, but you usually need to book the day before through your accommodation. Tours cost more but include a driver who waits, which matters at sites with no regular transport back.

Self-drive is possible in theory but fuel shortages make it unreliable in 2026. If you do hire a car, book through a state or hotel agency and carry cash for fuel.

For anything involving a domestic flight, have a plan B. Schedules change at short notice, so build a buffer day before your flight home.
