Best places to visit in Cuba: top cities, regions and sights

If you go despite current advisories, build the trip around Havana, Viñales and Trinidad. Havana is the only city with regular international flights in 2026, so it is both your arrival point and your safety buffer. Viñales is two hours west for the tobacco valley; Trinidad is a colonial town with a valley of its own. Cienfuegos fits as a single night on the way east.

Skip Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa on a first trip unless a domestic flight is confirmed for your dates. Both are far east, and overland travel there eats days you may not have.

Seven days is enough for Havana and Viñales only. Ten days covers the classic west and centre loop: Havana, Viñales, Cienfuegos, Trinidad. Fourteen days lets you add Santa Clara and, if a domestic flight is running that week, Santiago de Cuba.

Travelers on a tight schedule should stay west and centre. Anyone set on the east needs to accept long bus days or pay for a flight that may be cancelled. Americans also need a legal OFAC travel category before booking, because ordinary tourism is not one.

Old Havana holds the Plaza de la Catedral and Plaza Vieja, both walkable in a morning before the heat builds. The Museo de la Revolución fills an afternoon. The Malecón is the evening default: locals fish, argue and watch the sunset along the seawall.

Stay in Habana Vieja or Vedado. Old town puts the sights on your doorstep; Vedado is quieter and closer to the music venues. Either way, plan on foot in the morning and a taxi after dark.

Viñales sits in a valley of limestone mogotes about two hours west of Havana. This is tobacco country: drying barns, oxen-ploughed fields and walking or horse routes into the valley. Two nights is enough to see the valley and one cave system without rushing.

The Bay of Pigs, or Playa Girón, works as a one-night stop on the south coast if you are heading to Cienfuegos or Trinidad. It pairs a small museum with shore snorkelling.

Trinidad is the best-preserved colonial town on the island: cobbles, pastel walls and the Plaza Mayor. Give it three nights and use one day for the Valle de los Ingenios, the old sugar estates in the hills behind town.

Cienfuegos is a single night on the way: a French-founded bay city with a neoclassical centre and a different feel from Trinidad. Santa Clara, inland, is a one-night stop for the Che Guevara memorial and a break in the Havana–Trinidad run.

Santiago de Cuba is the music capital of the east, with a strong Afro-Caribbean identity and revolutionary history. Three nights suits it, but only commit if a domestic flight is confirmed for your dates; the bus from Havana is a long day.

Baracoa is the far eastern tip: cacao, rivers and a road that storms regularly cut. It is rewarding and slow to reach. Treat it as a trip of its own rather than a stop on a loop, and check road and flight status before you commit.

Transport is the constraint, not the sightseeing. Viazul buses and shared colectivo taxis link the main towns, but seats sell out and departures slip. Book each leg the day before, and never schedule a long transfer for the day you fly home.

Bring cash for the whole trip and keep it secure. Foreign cards often fail at Cuban terminals, so a card is a backup, not a plan. Power and fuel shortages can close restaurants or cancel buses at short notice, which is why every route above ends back in Havana with a spare night.

Check your government's advisory before you book. In September 2026 the UK advises against all but essential travel, Canada says avoid non-essential travel and Australia says reconsider your need to travel; the US rates Cuba Level 2. Insurance that covers Cuba, including medical evacuation, matters more here than almost anywhere.
