Best time to visit Cuba: weather and seasons by month

Use this as a filter, not a forecast. The verdict column reflects both weather and the current operational picture — power, fuel and flights — because in 2026 those decide more trips than rain does.

Dry season runs November to April. May to October is hot and humid with afternoon storms; June to November is hurricane season, with the worst risk in September and October. The east (Santiago de Cuba, Baracoa, Holguín) is hotter and wetter than Havana, and Baracoa is wet much of the year.

Cuba is long and the three zones behave differently. Havana, Viñales and Varadero in the west have the classic dry-season pattern: November to April dry at 20–27 °C, May to October hot and humid with afternoon storms. Cold fronts in January can make Havana genuinely cool and windy — pack a layer.

The centre and south coast — Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara, Camagüey — follow the same calendar but run slightly warmer; the Escambray hills behind Trinidad are cooler than the coast. Oriente, the east, is the hottest region: April and November are only 'ok', May to July hot, and Baracoa wet for much of the year. The east took the worst of Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, so check local conditions if you plan to travel there.

High season is late December to March, plus Easter and the July carnival in Santiago de Cuba. That is when casa particular rooms and hire cars are hardest to find and dearest. Low season — May, June, September and October — is cheaper and quieter, but you are trading price for heat, storms and, in 2026, a higher chance of power cuts.

Holidays move things more than weather does. Expect closures and events around 1–2 January, 1 May, 25–27 July and 25 December. During Santiago's carnival in July, rooms in the city are scarce — book far ahead or avoid those dates. Havana's founding day on 16 November and the film festival in December are low-impact but busy in the capital.

Weather is the easy part. The harder question is whether to go at all right now. The US rates Cuba Level 2 (exercise increased caution), while the UK advises against all but essential travel, Canada says avoid non-essential travel and Australia says reconsider your need to travel — because fuel, power and flights keep failing. Americans also need a legal OFAC travel category; tourism is not one.

If you decide to go, plan around services rather than sunshine: four nights in Havana, two in Viñales and three in Trinidad, cash for the whole trip, a return flight on an airline still flying, and two buffer days. Summer heat without fans or air conditioning is the real problem from May to October, so a dry-season trip is also the more comfortable one.

Start with the weather window: November to April, ideally December to April. Then check the two things that can cancel the trip — your government's advice level and whether flights are running. If both are acceptable, book the dry months and avoid the September–October storm peak.

If budget matters more than comfort, May and June are the sweet spot: low-season prices with the hurricane peak still months away. If you want the carnival, plan July in Santiago de Cuba and accept the heat and the closures around 26 July.

Hurricane season is June to November. If you travel then, buy insurance that covers weather disruption and keep your plans flexible. The east coast is more exposed than Havana, and Baracoa is wet year-round regardless of season.
