Varadero is the only beach that works as a whole trip: a hotel strip, its own airport and a long run of sand (check). The cayos are resort islands with little outside the gates. Trinidad and Havana beaches are half-day add-ons. The east, around Guardalavaca and Playa Pesquero, is quieter and harder to reach.

How we chose
We ranked on four things: how easy the beach is to reach from a gateway city, whether there is somewhere to sleep at more than one price, how reliable the water and power are at that base, and whether the beach is usable outside a resort gate.
We left out beaches that need a private car and a local guide with no backup if the car fails, and beaches where the only access is a seasonal boat. We also weighted 2026 conditions: a beach two hours from Havana beats a better beach eight hours away when fuel is short.
Prices are 2026 estimates in euros or USD; Cuban hotels often quote in USD or EUR and card payments are unreliable, so treat every figure as a band, not a rate.
When to go
The dry season runs Nov–Apr, with Dec–Mar the driest and busiest (check). Water is warm enough to swim year-round; the difference is rain, heat and hurricanes, not cold.
Jun–Nov is hurricane season, with the highest risk in Sep–Oct (check). Storms can close roads and airports for days, and the east (Baracoa, Guardalavaca) is hit more often than the north cays. If you travel then, keep two buffer days before your flight home.
Easter and the July–August school holidays fill Cuban resorts with local and Canadian travellers (check); book early or shift a week either side.

Getting there
Varadero has its own international airport (VRA) and is about 2 hours from Havana by road (check). Cayo Coco (CCC) and Cayo Santa María (via Santa Clara, SNU) also have airports, but in 2026 schedules change often — confirm your flight is still operating before you pay for hotels.
For Trinidad, take a Viazul bus or a shared colectivo taxi from Havana (about 5 hours) and then a taxi to Playa Ancón (check). For Holguín's beaches, fly to Holguín (HOG) if a flight runs, or take the long bus from Havana.
Within Cuba, Viazul and colectivos are the usual options; both need booking a day ahead in high season (check). Rental cars exist but fuel shortages make them a gamble in 2026.
