One day in Colombo
Start in Fort around 8am, when the streets are still cool and the old commercial buildings are quiet. Walk to the Dutch Hospital precinct for coffee, then cross into Pettah, where the wholesale market runs at full volume until midday. Keep bags in front of you and expect to be jostled.
After lunch, ride to Gangaramaya temple on Beira Lake, then take a three-wheeler to the National Museum if it is open (check hours and ticket price on arrival). Finish at Galle Face Green for the sunset and street food along the promenade. This is the single highest-value half-day in the city.

Two days in Colombo
Day one runs as above. On day two, slow down: the Independence Square area and Viharamahadevi Park in the morning, the Colombo City Centre or ODEL for air-conditioned shopping in the afternoon heat, and a proper rice-and-curry dinner rather than street snacks.
If you are heading to the hill country or the coast the next morning, keep day two light and pack in the afternoon. Trains out of Colombo Fort station leave early, and the station is easier to navigate when you are not rushed.
Three days in Colombo
A third day only pays off with a half-day trip. Mount Lavinia, about 12 km south, has a beach and a hotel on the headland; Kelaniya temple, roughly 10 km northeast, is a major Buddhist site. Both are reachable by road in under an hour outside peak traffic (check).
Alternatively use day three to move: Negombo is close to the airport and works as a last night before a flight, and Kalutara sits on the way south if you are heading to Galle.

Colombo is cheap by Western standards but temple and museum tickets add up. Budget for transport separately: three-wheelers and app cabs are metered or quoted per trip, and airport runs cost far more than city hops. All figures are 2026 estimates and should be confirmed locally.

Practical tips
Colombo sits in the Western Province and the parent country facts put the best window at December to March. Outside that, expect afternoon downpours; plan indoor stops for 3–5pm.
Traffic is the main thing that breaks an itinerary. The 7–10am and 4–8pm peaks can double a short journey, so do not schedule a temple visit 30 minutes before a train. Keep the last night within two hours of the airport, as the country guidance says.
