Suburb-to-suburb trips by train usually mean going back through downtown Chicago. Two suburb days in a row cost more time than they look like on a map.
Metra runs on a commuter rhythm: frequent inbound in the morning, outbound in the evening, thin at weekends on some lines. Check the last train before you commit to an evening out.
Tolls apply on I-88, I-90, I-94 and parts of I-80. A rental car without a transponder pays higher rates by plate.
