Weert

Give Weert one night as a rail stop between Eindhoven and Roermond, or a half-day for the Markt and vlaai; skip it if you only have 3 nights in the Netherlands.

Weert is a small Limburg town of about 50,000 on the InterCity line between Eindhoven and Maastricht, 30 km south of Eindhoven by road. The compact centre is a market square with a 72 m church tower, two small museums and a bakery culture built on Weerter vlaai. The surrounding Kempen~Broek marshland and the Peel are the real reason to stop longer, and they need a bike.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
  • Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
  • Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
  • Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. For Kempen~Broek, the Peel and the outlying mills, rent a bike at the station (Rijwielshop NS, Stationsweg 17a) — expect roughly €7.50–15 per day for a basic bike plus a deposit, and bring ID. Local buses 41 and 42 run through the centre; regional lines connect Venlo, Roermond and Eindhoven. Parking garages sit at Beekstraat, Nieuwe Markt, Kromstraat and Bassin.

Watch out

Safety

Weert is a low-risk Dutch town; the practical issues are bikes (yours and theirs), unlit cycle paths after dark and wet, muddy trails in Kempen~Broek. Petty theft is rare but lock your bike.
  • Mills open mainly Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays, by volunteer rota: check molensinweert.nl before you cycle out.
  • St Martinuskerk interior hours are short (roughly late morning and mid-afternoon on weekdays): check the parish site.
  • Kempen~Broek paths flood and turn to mud after rain; wear boots outside summer.
  • Some listed restaurants and hotels change hands or close: check before booking a table or a room.
