Central Queensland is the coast between Bundaberg and Townsville: beef country, coal ports, reef islands and long drives. Distances are the whole story — Townsville to Rainbow Beach is about 13 hours of driving. Pick one or two bases, not a full coastal sweep. Rockhampton and Yeppoon cover the southern half (Capricorn Coast, Great Keppel, Carnarvon gorge country); Airlie Beach covers the Whitsundays; Hervey Bay covers K'gari and whale season. Without a car you are on buses and planes, and the gaps between towns are real.
