The Whitsundays are 74 islands inside the Great Barrier Reef, and almost nobody sleeps on most of them. Two bases do the work: Airlie Beach on the mainland for cheaper beds, tour choice and Shute Harbour departures, and Hamilton Island for resort comfort, its own airport and free shuttles. Day boats and overnight sailing trips reach Whitehaven Beach and the outer reef; the rest of the archipelago is national park, camp sites and empty coves.
