Long Island runs about 190 km east from New York City to Montauk. Nassau County is dense and suburban, 30–50 minutes by train from Manhattan; Suffolk County turns rural, with North Fork wineries, South Shore ocean beaches and the Hamptons. Sleep in one county and day-trip the other — crossing the island in rush hour can take two hours. Summer and fall are the seasons; winter is cold and quiet.
