Thuringowa is the western half of the Townsville urban area, wrapped around the Ross River and running north along the coast to Balgal Beach and Rollingstone. It has no old town and no single centre: what it has is Riverway, a string of quiet beaches, and the Paluma Range rainforest an hour inland. Most visitors sleep in Townsville and drive out for a day.

Getting around

A car is the honest answer: sights are spread over 60 km of coast and range, and buses (Sunbus, run under the Translink network) mostly serve commuter routes. Taxis run 24 h. The Bruce Highway (A1) and the Ring Road carry you north to the beaches and south into Townsville.

Watch out

Safety

Suburban and generally safe; the real risks are heat, wet-season flooding, unpatrolled surf and marine stingers outside the netted season at Balgal Beach.
  • Swim between the flags at Balgal Beach: the stinger net is patrolled Nov–May only, and the rest of the year is marine-stinger season.
  • Creek and lagoon swimming is freshwater and generally safe, but check for flash-flood closures after heavy rain in the wet season.
  • Beach and bush tracks are unlit at night and wildlife (kangaroos, cassowary-country birds) crosses the road at dusk.
  • Some Paluma and Crystal Creek camp sites need a pre-booked permit; no permit, no pitch.
